Absolutely! That particular cell was in a high sheared environment. I believe 500mb shear was in the 80kt range and it lacked the balancing factor of a good backed LLJ scenario. The cell near McCook Nebraska was stretched out and seemed to have th...

This is a summary of what project Vortex 2 accomplished during their first year of operation. It was a very slow severe weather season in 2009, at least within the project's time and space domain. Our chase class converged with the Vortex 2 arma...

Yes, it is interesting to see how much different weather patterns such as El NIno and La Nina will effect the numbers. I felt it was necessary to advocate exactly how much more active next season could be early on so that we can prepare. I don't e...

This was a fantastic post!! Required reading for sure. The shear associated with the active subtropical jet also tore apart most all Atlantic tropical storm attempts this season. 2010 may be an interesting year!

Note about chase cameras!

I am experimenting with several technologies presently. Mogulus, seen below, has the advantage of streaming produced content while no chases are going on and it has several other features which make it appealing. One drawback are the ads!

Severe Studios provides streaming for chasers only. It's chief advantage is a clean look and service to chasers only. I may use this for the chase class or in chases I do for KOLR/KSFX-TV.

I've also played around with Ustream and there are other chaser-specific sites which I have yet to investigate.

Variations In Active Tornado Seasons During El Nino & La Nina Seasons

We have experienced an inactive spring season for tornadoes due to what is called "El Nino". El Nino is experienced when warmer than normal water temperatures occur in the Pacific Ocean. This also called the Southern Oscillation. A pattern shift of surface air pressure between the eastern and western tropi… Continue

Monday Severe Episode. . .Or Not?

Looking at the latest model guidance. A strong upper level disturbance is forecast to cut off from the polar jet and bring enough bulk shear to possibly produce some action. There is also a fast moving cold front that may undercut everything giving us a damaging wind threat only not ruling out a few ropes. Td's forecast in the 60's along with Ml CAPE values near 2500 should give some action although too early to tell exactly where. I would play Eastern Kansas with the best temperature spreads ma… Continue
